REC has been a bit of an innovator in solar panel design. They were the first company in the world to release panels utilising the innovative split module design with half-cut cells, rather than the standard full size square cells.
Half-cut cells and split panel design: an REC innovation
REC’s half-cut cell and split panel design has been incorporated into all its Alpha and TwinPeak range. This means improved performance and higher efficiency over the life of each panel.
Traditional full-size cells can suffer up to 40% power loss when a small portion of the panel is shaded. And if the entire width of the panel is shaded, power production may stop completely.
REC’s half-cut cell technology overcomes this by splitting the panel into two halves. The two halves are then joined at the centre, but each side produces electricity independently of the other. This means that if one half is shaded, the performance on the other half of the panel won’t be reduced. Power from both sides is combined before it leaves the panel.
Another advantage of this technology is that the current is reduced to half on each side, meaning smaller busbars can be used, losses are reduced by 75% and there is less potential for hot spots forming from shaded cells.
Over time, all this means that you get a higher yield from your installation.

REC Alpha solar panels
REC Alpha Series solar panels are described by the company as a “beautiful solar panel with beast levels of power.”
In addition to featuring REC’s twin-panel design, the Alpha panels offer half-cut heterojunction cells that are comprised of high purity n-type silicon mono wafers sandwiched between two layers of amorphous silicon.
With 16 micro-wire busbars and advanced lead-free low temperature connections between cells, the panels deliver 21.7% peak efficiency (20% higher than a standard 60-cell panel), and exceptional high temperature performance (-0.26%/C).
According to REC, “the Alpha delivers the world’s best power density on a 60-cell module.”
Each 380W panel measure 1721 x 1016 x 30mm and weighs 19.5kg.
REC TwinPeak 2 Mono solar panels
REC’s award-winning TwinPeak 2 series of panels were the first to use its innovative split module design with half-cut cells.
The TwinPeak 2 Mono builds on the success of its earlier model but uses more efficient multi PERC monocrystalline half-cut cells to boost power output up to 330W.
PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell or Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact), is a new technology aimed at achieving higher energy conversion efficiency by adding a dielectric passivation layer on the rear of the cell.
This p-type mono variant offers higher power output per square meter. You get a class-leading efficiency of up to 17.7%, setting new standards for polycrystalline solar modules and providing at least 25W more per panel than from a standard 60-cell panel on a multicrystalline (poly) platform.
By delivering more power per square meter, you will need fewer TwinPeak 2 Mono panels. This means reduced costs through quicker installation times and the need for fewer components.
Each 330W panel measure 1675 x 997 x 38mm, covers a surface area of 1.67m2, and weighs 18.5kg.
For commercial applications, REC offer both the Alpha and TwinPeak range with the same half-cut split panel technology but in the larger 72 cell format (Alpha 72), plus 72 cell p-type multicrystalline panels (TwinPeak 2S Mono 72).
The Alpha Series is available in up to 450 Watts for the commercial 72 panels while the TwinPeak 2S Mono 72 provides up to 390W.
